10thIAEA Technical Meeting on

”H-mode Physics and Transport Barriers”

28-30 September 2005

St.Petersburg, Russia

International Atomic Energy Agency

The 10th IAEA Technical Meeting on ”H-mode Physics and Transport Barriers” will take place between 28 and 30 September, 2005 in St. Petersburg. This meeting is the continuation of a series of previous meetings (San Diego 1987, Gut Ising 1989, Abingdon 1991, Naka 1993, Princeton 1995, Kloster Seeon 1997, Oxford 1999, Toki 2001, San Diego 2003).

The purpose of the meeting is to present and discuss the status of H-mode and internal transport barrier experiments, theory and modeling in magnetic fusion research and to discuss scientific solutions of H-mode control for the purpose of exploring possibilities of enhanced operating regimes in next step large fusion devices.

The meeting will be organized around six broad topics of current interest. An overview talk will be presented for each topic.

  1. Internal Transport Barriers: critical issues
    Litaudon, CEA, EU

  2. Edge Transport Barriers: pedestal stability/dynamics and ELMs
    H.Wilson, UKAEA, EU

  3. Transport Barriers in non-axisymmetric devices
    F.Wagner, IPP-Greifswald, EU

  4. Transport Barrier theories
    P.Diamond, UCSD, US

  5. Turbulence behaviour in the presence of Transport Barriers
    K.Burrell, GA, US

  6. Improved Confinement projections/issues for burning devices
    A.Fukuyama, Kyoto Univ., JA

Each talk will be followed by discussion and poster session of contributed papers, related to the topic. To achieve the purpose of the meeting, the International Advisory Committee solicits contributed papers that present and discuss recent experimental, theoretical or modeling studies of transport barriers, both internal and edge, as observed in numerous magnetic confinement machines and in a variety of magnetic topologies. Participants are encouraged to communicate with Invited Speakers to include their results in the overview talk/discussion.

The official language of the meeting is English (no interpretation will be provided). It is expected that the meeting will start at 09:00 on 28 September 2005 and end by 17:45 on 30 September 2005.

Written versions of the overview and contributed papers, which meet the referees' approval and appropriate length requirements, will be published in a special issue of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. However, written papers are not obligatory.

Submission between 1 and 31 May 2005

Anyone wishing to present a paper during this meeting should submit an abstract to the local organizers via e-mail: The instructions for authors may be found at

The abstracts will be selected and classified by the International Advisory Committee. Authors will be informed of the acceptance and placement of their contributions by email, by 10 July 2005. The accepted abstracts will be made available on the Meeting webpage

Participants are encouraged to publish their presentations in the Special Issue of the of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion journal. Invited papers should not exceed 14 journal pages, contributed – 6 pages. A publication fee and instructions for the manuscript preparation will be provided later.

Electronic versions of manuscripts and presentations will be collected at the meeting.

A summary report of the meeting will be prepared for submission to the “Nuclear Fusion” journal.

Participants from IAEA Member States or international organizations are expected to attend. Participants should be persons actively involved in the topics of the meeting. A participant will be accepted only if the Participation Form A (available at is transmitted through the appropriate Governmental representative authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Atomic Energy Authority).

No registration fee will be charged to participants. However, a publication fee will be collected from the participants wishing to publish their papers in the Special Issue of the PPCF.

Limited funds are available for a few participants mainly from developing countries with low economic resources. Instruction for application for the Travel Grant is available on the Meeting webpage.

Designated participants who require a visa to enter Russia should submit the necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of Russia as soon as possible. Local Organizers will provide the participants with visa support. See for detail.

The meeting will take place at the recently renovated "Moscow" hotel, located in the historical area of the city.

A block of rooms is reserved for accommodation of the participants in the "Moscow" hotel. The hotel description can be found at Room prices are in a range 80-120 EUR. Reservation instructions will appear at the meeting's website soon. To take advantage of the special prices please contact the LOC by July 15th, 2005.
