We briefly review recent advances in the field of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We discuss the connection of giant flares from soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) in nearby galaxies and short GRBs. We analyze the very bright short hard GRB 051103, discovered by Konus-Wind and localized by IPN, and argue that it is likely to be a giant SGR flare in the nearby galaxy M81 (NGC 3031).
