Absorption spectroscopy towards quasars has proven to be an excellent way to probe neutral and molecular gas along the line of sight. While many studies have concentrated on intervening systems, i.e. far from the background source, I will show recent results concerning gas much closer to the quasar, potentially affected by the source itself, but also providing constraints on the structure of the emission regions.
