Founded by Peter the Great in 1703 on the delta of the Neva
river, where it enters the gulf of Finland, St.Petersburg was the capital of the Russian
Empire from 1712 to 1917. During that time the city was the scene of many remarquable
historical events. In 1918 it lost its capital status to Moscow. It is the largest seaport
in Russia and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. With its 600 bridges over the
Neva river it is called the 'Venice of the North'.

St.Petersburg is also one of the
largest and most important scientific and cultural centers in Russia. Basic research in
chemistry and physics is traditionally centred at institutes of the Russian Academy of
Sciences (RAS) and universities. The St.Petersburg RAS consists of more than ten
institutions that carry out research in all areas of chemistry and physics. The Ioffe
Institute is the largest of them, gathering researches in atomic and molecular physics,
plasma physics, nano-hetero-structure materials, solid-state physics, semiconductors,
electronics, etc.
